Welcome to Part 2B of our Learn to Read the Qur’an series!
For practice click the letter or a group of letters to here the sound.
In this lesson, we shift our focus from recognizing individual Arabic letters to understanding how they visually transform when joined together. This step is essential in preparing you to read connected Arabic text, such as words and verses from the Holy Qur’an.
🧠 What You’ll Learn
This lesson introduces you to:
✍️ How Arabic letters change shape depending on their position in a group (beginning, middle, or end).
🧩 How individual letters look when joined to other letters in common combinations.
👁️ How to visually distinguish joined letters — an essential reading skill as you move toward full Qur’anic words.
We are not introducing new sounds here — rather, this is about visual familiarity. The goal is for you to recognize connected forms quickly and confidently.
🎧 Interactive Letter Board
To support your practice, we’ve included an interactive letter board.
Click on any letter group to hear its sound. This is not to teach new pronunciation, but to reinforce your memory of each letter’s sound while practicing its joined form.
The audio serves as a reminder so you don’t have to go back and check previous lessons when reviewing.
Focus on observing how the letters look, especially in common pairs or triples.
Examples:
Use this board regularly to strengthen your visual recognition of connected letters in different contexts.
📚 Why This Matters
In the Qur’an and in Arabic writing generally, letters are rarely written in isolation. They are almost always joined in words. Recognizing these joined forms is critical for:
✅ Reading Qur’anic text fluently and accurately.
✅ Avoiding confusion between letters that change drastically when joined (e.g. ع, غ, هـ).
✅ Gaining the confidence to move from letters to full words and verses.
This lesson helps build the visual literacy needed to transition from letter recognition to word recognition — a major milestone in learning to read the Qur’an.
🧭 How to Use This Lesson
🔍 Study each group carefully. Focus on the shape changes of each letter when it joins with others.
👂 Use the audio for quick recall of letter names and sounds if needed.
🔄 Repeat until you become comfortable recognizing the joined forms at a glance.

In the next stage of the course, we’ll introduce short vowels (ḥarakāt) — a critical element in learning how letters are pronounced within words and how meaning changes.
Until then, use this lesson to train your eyes. The more time you spend familiarizing yourself with joined letter forms, the more naturally you’ll be able to read the divine words of the Qur’an.
