Course Description
Learn the Arabic Alphabet – Part One B: Mastering Joined Letters
This course is the second stage in the Arabic reading journey and focuses on teaching learners how Arabic letters behave when they are joined together in written form. Building upon prior mastery of isolated letters, Part One B trains students to visually recognize, accurately pronounce, and fluently read joined Arabic letter combinations as they appear in authentic Qur’ānic text.
The course emphasizes visual pattern recognition, shape transformation, and progressive complexity. Students learn how letter shapes change depending on position (beginning, middle, or end) and how joined letters must be read as a continuous unit from right to left. Through repetition, structured drills, quizzes, and guided practice, learners develop the essential skill required to move from letter recognition to real word reading.
Lesson One: Joined Letters – Set One
Lesson One introduces students to the fundamental concept of letter joining. Learners study how core letters change shape when connected to neighboring letters, focusing on letters with bowls, tails, and deep curves.
Students work with joined forms involving jeem (ج), haau (ح), khaau (خ), seen (س), sheen (ش), swaad (ص), dwaad (ض), ayn (ع), ghayn (غ), qaaf (ق), and faau (ف).
Practice includes short joined combinations such as:
- ج + ب → جب (jeem–baau)
- ح + ت → حت (haau–taau)
- خ + ل → خل (khaau–laam)
- س + ن → سن (seen–noon)
- ش + ط → شط (sheen–twaau)
- ص + ل → صل (swaad–laam)
- ض + و → ضو (dwaad–waaw)
- ع + ر → عر (ayn–raau)
- غ + ث → غث (ghayn–thaau)
Pronunciation drills emphasize correct articulation of throat letters (ayn ع, ghayn غ) and heavy letters (swaad ص, dwaad ض), while visual drills train learners to follow joined shapes smoothly from right to left.
Lesson Two: Joined Letters – Set Two
Lesson Two expands the learner’s exposure to joined letters and introduces greater visual variety. This lesson focuses on how letters behave in the initial and medial positions, particularly when joined to flexible connectors.
Students study joined forms involving laam (ل), meem (م), seen (س), sheen (ش), qaaf (ق), faau (ف), taau (ت), dhaal (ذ), and yaau (ي).
Examples practiced include:
- ل + م → لم (laam–meem)
- ل + ض → لض (laam–dwaad)
- م + ج → مج (meem–jeem)
- م + ح → مح (meem–haau)
- س + ج → سج (seen–jeem)
- ش + ز → شز (sheen–zaau)
- ف + ي → في (faau–yaau)
- ب + ي → بي (baau–yaau)
Visual drills reinforce recognition of tails, curves, and dots, while pronunciation practice ensures clarity when letters are read in rapid succession.
Lesson Three: Joined Letters – Set Three
Lesson Three introduces more advanced joined-letter patterns and longer combinations. The lesson places strong emphasis on throat letters and heavy letters when joined, as these often present difficulty for learners.
Students work extensively with combinations involving ayn (ع), ghayn (غ), qaaf (ق), khaau (خ), meem (م), noon (ن), and swaad (ص).
Examples include:
- ع + م → عم (ayn–meem)
- ل + غ → لغ (laam–ghayn)
- ك + ي → كي (kaaf–yaau)
- ص + ف → صف (swaad–faau)
- غ + غ → غغ (ghayn–ghayn)
- ق + خ → قخ (qaaf–khaau)
- م + غ → مغ (meem–ghayn)
- م + ن → من (meem–noon)
Students learn to slow their reading, visually trace letter connections, and maintain accurate articulation, especially for deep and heavy sounds.
Lesson Four: Joined Letters – Set Four (Advanced Integration)
Lesson Four represents the most advanced stage of Part One B and integrates all previously learned skills. Learners are introduced to longer joined-letter clusters that closely resemble real Arabic word structures.
Students practice advanced combinations involving laam–alif (لا), meem (م), waaw (و), haau (ح), ghayn (غ), noon (ن), and ayn (ع).
Examples include:
- ل + ا → لا (laam–alif)
- م + ل + و → ملو (meem–laam–waaw)
- ح + ل + م → حلم (haau–laam–meem)
- غ + ل + م → غلم (ghayn–laam–meem)
- ن + ع + م → نعم (noon–ayn–meem)
- ف + ق + ق → فقق (faau–qaaf–qaaf)
This lesson reinforces reading continuity, visual endurance, and pronunciation consistency. It also serves as a comprehensive review and assessment phase.
Course Outcome
By the end of Part One B, students can confidently read joined Arabic letters in a wide variety of combinations, accurately pronounce each letter within connected forms, and maintain smooth right-to-left reading flow. This mastery confirms readiness to advance to the next stage, where short vowels and full word reading are introduced.
