What Is the Sukoon (ـْ)?

The Sukoon is a special symbol written above a letter:
ـْ

It means:

  • The letter has no vowel sound
  • It is silent
  • The reader rests on it
  • The sound of the previous letter flows into it

Because of this, the Sukoon is often called:

  • The silent vowel
  • A rest
  • No-haraka

⭐ How Do You Read Sukoon Letters?

Rule:

You must read the vowel of the first letter and then land on the second letter silently.

Example: لَبْ

  • لَ = la
  • بْ = b (silent)
  • Combined: lab

Another example: سَبْ

  • سَ = sa
  • بْ = b
  • Combined: sab

The important part:

❗ Sukoon does NOT start a syllable

You cannot read the second letter first.
You always read:

(1) Vowel + (2) Sukoon

⭐ Why Is the Sukoon Important?

  • It appears in thousands of Qur’ānic words
  • It helps form strong consonant endings
  • It improves reading fluency
  • It prepares you for shaddah, sukoon clusters, and Tajwīd rules
